Trendspotting on Pinterest and what’s trending

Pinterest is the place to spot trending themes, items, products, and events. It has always been a place where people save and find inspiration.

Having a great eye and an open mind will help you to see upcoming trends on Pinterest. I know it might not be as simple as it sounds but let me tell you how I do it.

How to find trends on Pinterest?

One thing I know for sure is that you need to browse Pinterest a lot to spot those upcoming trends. If you never are on the platform, you will never spot anything. Keep your eyes open and be present.

After seeing some colors, styles, and items time after time on your Pinterest feed you can assume that they are most probably signs of an upcoming trend.

But you also need to trust your instincts. All the things that you’ll see constantly on your Pinterest feed will not make it to a megatrend.

Pinterest’s own trend reports are an important part when I’m searching for upcoming trends. You will find them on the Pinterest Business insights page

For retailers who want to spot new trends early on: If you’re a retailer you should watch this video where Sephora’s representative tells how they use Pinterest to spot new trends. You might get some tips on how to be on top of the newest trends.

Action Tip:

Start following Pinterest influencers on your niche, and other Pinterest super users as they usually are the ones who either create trends or spot them first on Pinterest!

Check this too:

When you put your cursor to Pinterest Search bar it shows you “Trending Pinterest” themes. That’s one way to know what things are trending on Pinterest. However, those trending things are aimed at you based on your own interests and searches on Pinterest.

What to do when you spot a trend?

The first thing that you should do is create a Pinterest board for that trend

After you’ve created a Pinterest board start creating your own content which incorporates the upcoming trend to your own content. And of course, start pinning it to your relevant board(s).

Here’s an example of what I mean:

One mega-trend has been flamingos.

You’re a lifestyle blogger writing mostly about food, family, and travel.

Brainstorm how you can incorporate flamingos into your blog posts so that they will interest your audience.

You can create a flamingo-themed food party or take a towel with flamingo prints with you when you’re traveling on a beach holiday. Or you can make DIY flamingo crafts with your kid (okay, I don’t know exactly how to do any DIY flamingo crafts things but you may have ideas for that…). There are endless possibilities to be creative and on-trend.

Pssst...flamingos are not a new trend anymore but I just used it as an example of an old trend that was really big on Pinterest.

When creating your own content for the trend that you think might be big in the future start contacting possible collaborators and other blogs and bloggers. Ask whether they can help you to spread the word about that soon-to-be trend.

Pitch your blog posts and story ideas of the upcoming trend to big blogs and online magazines.

Action tip:

Make a list of everything that you see on Pinterest and what you think might be “the next big thing”. Create a secret board for trends and start saving ideas into it. Then start creating content related to your saved trendy ideas. Create content that you know will perform well on Pinterest (like DIYs, recipes, how-to’s, quotes, etc).

WHAT’S TRENDING IN DECEMBER?

It’s the holiday season and there is a lot of holiday and Christmas-related pins spreading around Pinterest at the moment.

How do you know what are the hottest trends in December?

Go to the Pinterest Business insights and check what Pinterest thinks are the top December trends.

A few of the trends may surprise you. These trends Pinterest has spotted to be trending on the platform at the moment (source: Pinterest trend report December 2019):

  • essential oils

  • green caffeine

  • belts

Essential oils and aromatherapy are big trends in December. People are searching for different essential oil blends to “snuggle into the season”. There is an increase in these searches: homemade reed diffuser, nutmeg diffuser blends, deep sleep diffuser blends, cough, and cold diffuser blends.

Green caffeine means basically everything related to green tea. The increase of searches can be found on these search terms: peach green tea, mint lime green tea, green tea lemonade, and green turmeric tea.

The belt outfit trend includes interesting top search terms: shoe lace belt, animal print belt outfit, chain belt outfit jeans, and circle belt outfit. If you’re a fashion blogger, check out those keywords!

And lastly stairs trend! People are searching for design ideas, and the stairs searches are up. These search terms have top increase: black spindles staircase, stair railing ideas wooden, space under stairs, and staircase storage. Who have thought these would be trends….

You will also find interesting trends based on different countries in December.

Australia: mullets

Canada: biker chic outfit

ALL-TIME HOLIDAY RELATED SEARCHES ON PINTEREST

Seasonal things that you might want to pin still in December are all kinds of gift guides. People look for lots of gift inspiration on Pinterest. I predict that minimalist and sustainable gifts will be trending this year.

Also, things related to different Christmas traditions and seasonal home decor are always huge during December. Look out for Christmas bucket lists, Christmas movie lists, and different home decor pieces. Every year people also search for kids’ activities during holidays, crafts to make, and drink recipes.

Holiday hosting is one of my favorite themes in December. I like to save ideas for table settings, tableware, theme ideas, and of course holiday recipes! Check out my Christmas and Winter board.

Last Tip: In case you are a blogger who struggles to find content ideas for your blog use Pinterest to find ideas and inspiration for your content calendar.
